Clutching a little pink purse and wearing her favorite faux fur coat, 4 1/2-year-old Suri Cruise headed out in Vancouver, BC today with her nanny (February 21). The pretty preschooler is in town while her dad Tom Cruise films Mission Impossible IV.

Suri’s mom Katie Holmes has also been in the Canadian city, and the family have been busy checking out the sights – earlier this month we spotted them taking a trip to Science World.

‘It looked worse than it actually was,’ the ‘OMG’ singer laughs about accidental blow during concert serenade.

Usher’s club-rattling jam “OMG” may “kill it every night” according to tourmate Miguel, but when the Atlanta crooner hit Madison Square Garden earlier this week, he was almost taken out by a clumsy fan.

When the singer touched down in New York on Monday, he indulged a super amped fan’s fantasy by pulling her onstage for an intimate flirty serenade of “Trading Places.” As Usher and the concertgoer got cozy on a recliner, she swiveled around to face the crooner — knocking him squarely in his mug with her foot. She began apologizing profusely as Usher briefly paused to collect himself. But the superstar took the strike in stride, quipping, “We play rough in the bed. We kick each other in the face and all type of good stuff.”

Although Usher brushed off the blow, the moment did make an impression on him.

“In all my years, this is one of the most interesting experiences. I got a kick out of it!” he told Us Weekly. The singer assured fans that the knock wasn’t that bad. “It looked worse than it actually was. My audience and I got a good laugh.”

As for the fan, the “DJ Got Us Fallin’ In Love” star maintained everything is all good on that front too. “Wherever you are baby, don’t feel bad,” Usher said. “No hard feelings.”

As Miguel has noted, Usher isn’t one dwell on drama, whether it’s cranking out another hit album or weathering an unexpected hit from a fan.

“He’s such a tremendous example of perseverance and determination,” Miguel recently told MTV News. “I was there throughout this album, so I’ve seen the adversity that he’s had to overcome perception-wise.”

What do you think of Usher’s response to getting knocked in the head by a fan? Tell us in the comments!

Kelis and her 18-month-old son Knight were spotted making their way through Australia’s Perth domestic airport today (February 20). This is our first good glimpse of the ‘Milkshake’ singer’s son – he’s adorable!

Kelis was one of the headline acts at this year’s Good Vibrations Festival – as was her ex-husband Nas. Concert organizers were reportedly instructed to ensure the pair didn’t cross paths backstage. Their split, which occurred when Kelis was 7 months pregnant, was not a very amicable one.

Producer says he was ‘in NYC tryin’ to make tracks’ for B and Bells’ songwriter/guitarist.

Over the years, Diplo has worked with everyone from Thom Yorke to Spank Rock (and, of course, M.I.A.) so perhaps it should come as no surprise that, for his next collaboration, he’s chosen to work with none other than Beyoncé. Oh, and electro-slammers Sleigh Bells, too. It all makes sense, in some bizarre way.

This is according to Dip himself, who posted a message — and a remix of the Sleigh Bells track “Tell ‘Em” — on his blog, in which he let it be known that he, his production partner Switch and Sleigh Bells’ songwriter/guitarist Derek Miller just wrapped sessions for Beyoncé’s follow-up to I Am … Sasha Fierce. He wasn’t quite sure what would come of the tracks they created.

“Me and Switch was in [the] studio in NYC tryin’ to make tracks with Derek and Beyoncé last week after we played her team [Sleigh Bells'] album,” Diplo wrote. “Dunno if we gonna manage to finish, but [it] was good times.”

At the very least, you know Bey’s husband, indie-rock fan Jay-Z, is pumped by the news. Diplo is just the latest in an ever-growing list of top-flight producers who have worked with Beyoncé in recent months. There’s still no release date or tentative title for her upcoming album, but she’s logged studio time with the likes of S1 (he of “Power” fame), Ne-Yo, Sean Garrett and Jim Jonsin.

A spokesperson for Beyoncé did not respond to MTV News’ request for comment on the Diplo tracks by press time.

Lady Gaga performs at the Grammys on Sunday
Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images

It didn’t take long for the big winners at Sunday night’s Grammy Awards to get an iTunes bump. Less than 24 hours after the show, the iTunes singles and albums charts were flooded with songs that were either performed on the show or which won awards during the program.

At press time on Tuesday morning (February 15), the iTunes singles tally was topped, not surprisingly, by Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way,” which got its televised debut during the show, followed by Dr. Dre’s “I Need a Doctor,” which Eminem and Dre (making his first televised performance in nearly a decade) also performed on the show.

Justin Bieber’s “Never Say Never” was at #3, followed by Cee Lo Green’s “F— You,” which was one of the most colorful and bizarre live spots in the three-and-a-half-hour show thanks to his outer-space Henson Puppet band and a cameo from a sultry Gwyneth Paltrow.

Mumford & Sons also got some iTunes love after playing on the show with folk legend Bob Dylan, which helped their song “The Cave” hit #5, followed by the night’s big Grammy victors, Lady Antebellum, and their Song and Record of the Year winner, “Need You Now.”

Although she didn’t perform “Firework” on the Grammys, Katy Perry’s anthem hung in at #7, ahead of Rihanna, who had two shots onstage at the Grammys. Her “S&M,” whose video is the subject of legal action, came in at #8, with Bruno Mars‘ “Grenade” and non-Grammy performer Avril Lavigne’s “What the Hell” rounding out the top 10.

Just outside the top 10, there were plenty more Grammy bumps to be found: Cee Lo’s censored “Forget You” (#11), Mumford & Sons’ “Little Lion Man” (#12), Muse’s “Uprising” (#20), Rihanna and Drake’s “What’s My Name?” (#21), Eminem’s “Love the Way You Lie” (#24) and Florence and the Machine’s “Dog Days Are Over” (#29).

The iTunes album chart told a similar story, with Mumford’s Sigh No More holding on to the #1 slot, followed by Bieber’s Never Say Never remixes disc, Album of the Year winner the Arcade Fire’s The Suburbs was back in play at #3, proceeded by Grammy performers the Avett Brothers’ I and Love and You at #4, with Best New Artist Esperanza Spalding’s Chamber Music Society climbing to #6.

Other Grammy album action included: Lady Antebellum’s Need You Now (#7), Bieber’s My World 2.0 (#8), Eminem’s Recovery (#9), Rihanna’s Loud (#10), Florence and the Machine’s Lungs (#11), Bieber’s My Worlds Acoustic (#12), the 2011 Grammy Nominees compilation (#14), as well as albums by the Black Keys (#17), Muse (#19), Bruno Mars (#21) and Spalding’s 2009 Esperanza release (#28).

Who didn’t see this one coming? Thanks to the pushed-up release date on Friday and the most talked-about entrance at Sunday night’s Grammys — not to mention what must have amounted to endless spins at clubs over the weekend — Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” is making some chart history.

Billboard reported that after just three days of availability, the tune shot to a record-setting debut on the Pop Songs radio airplay chart at #14 and is poised to possibly debut at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart this week thanks to brisk digital sales.

The first single from the album of the same name due on May 23 got 4,602 plays, which gives it the highest detections total by a debuting song in the chart’s 18-year history, representing an audience of 39.3 million. Citing unnamed sources, the magazine also reported that “Born” sold more than 450,000 downloads since its release on Friday morning, which could help the song debut at #1 on the Hot 100 and make it only the 19th song ever to do so on that chart.

Gaga could also potentially wrest a record for the biggest debut track for a woman from Britney Spears if download sales continue to climb. Spears’ “Hold it Against Me” rocked the chart a month ago with 411,000 in sales, but if Gaga’s numbers hold she could land the fourth-largest digital track debut of all time behind Flo Rida’s “Right Round,” (636,000) the Black Eyed Peas’ “Boom Boom Pow” (465,000) and Flo Rida’s “Low” (460,000).

The star stopped by “Jay Leno” the day after the Grammys, and in addition to explaining that she and Madonna have no beef over complaints by some that “Born This Way” bears too much of a resemblance to some earlier Material Girl hits, Gaga also announced her upcoming May HBO special and explained the inspiration behind her new album.

She also revealed that she changed up the entire look of her Grammy performance two days before it aired because she wasn’t happy with it. “I don’t want the band and dancers to feel like a band and dancers,” Gaga said, explaining why her crew was dressed in flesh-tone vinyl outfits that matched her own.

When Leno made a crack about her trio of Grammy outfits, which included a molded leather bodice created by fashion icon Thierry Mugler, Gaga said the latter had a cosmic inspiration. “It was inspired by humanoids, alien sex humanoid hybrid women,” she said matter of factly, rocking some of the low budget sci-fi alien face-ridged makeup she debuted at the Grammys, on Leno’s show.

The talk show host pointed to her third getup, which she said featured a giant black “church” hat, and asked if maybe it didn’t block the view of the star behind her at the show, actor Will Smith. Gaga promised it didn’t and added that she is in love with his daughter’s hit single. “I love Willow,” gushed Gaga, who took a series of photos with the pre-teen Smith family singer on her lap at the show. “I told her that she inspired me to whip my hair back and forth!”

Though she claimed to have written “Born This Way” in a matter of minutes, Gaga said she spent more than a year perfecting it and tweaking the music, promising that it is just one of the many sounds you’ll hear on the album. “The record is kind of eclectic in a way,” she said. “The rest of the songs on the album are quite different from ‘Born This Way.’ ”

As for the album’s theme, Gaga said it’s about “being able to know that when you were born, you weren’t just born in that moment, you have your entire life to realize the person that you’re potentially going to become and whoever you choose to be was part of your destiny.” Her hope, she said, was to encourage people who are feeling bullied or disenfranchised at the moment to realize that it’s “never too late to harness your inner superstar.”

The ‘O.M.G.’ singer looks forward to sharing the stage with his protégé on Sunday night.

HOLLYWOOD — At Sunday’s 53rd Grammy Awards, Usher will be pulling double duty as both a nominee and a performer. Of course, given the massive year he just completed — with the success of his smash single “O.M.G.” and as a mentor to rising phenom Justin Bieber — Ush’s Grammy plans seem rather fitting.

Especially since he’ll be performing with Bieber (and Bieber’s pal Jaden Smith), a move that’s just as much about celebrating Usher’s successes as it is the successes of his young protégé.

“Having been through [the Grammys] so many times, you couldn’t want for anything more than for your young protégé to have the opportunity to have one, so, in support of him having his moment, I wanted to be here,” Usher told MTV News on Thursday, hours before his performance at the (Belvedere) RED launch party in Hollywood. “And also to be there to perform, to kind of tell the story of how we came together. This music business has definitely been good to both of us, and this year we have a lot to be happy for.”

And just how will the dynamic duo tell that story? Well, Usher wasn’t about to reveal all the details, but he did say that he’s hoping their performance will show another side of Bieber … a side most tend to overlook.

“The performance will be fun,” Usher explained. “We want to get up there and just do what we do. Be comfortable, and have a great time. … This is kind of a crossover for Justin. Having performed on so many different stages, this is the way that I wanted him to be seen and an opportunity to show the industry — a lot of the industry, that didn’t believe [in him] — some of his other talents. He’s going to play acoustically, and also, we’ll get down a little bit.”

And though Ush is up for a pair of Grammy awards on Sunday — Best Male R&B Vocal Performance and Best Contemporary R&B Album for Raymond v. Raymond — he’s most looking forward to sharing the stage with Bieber and giving fans a look at where the young artist will be heading next.

“I’m very proud, man. I definitely saw it from the beginning, but thanks to the team that we have around us, it was made to happen. And that story has only just begun,” Usher said. “The story of Justin Bieber doesn’t stop with screaming girls; we need screaming fans all around the world … a cultural experience that’s much more than just fanfare. And that’s what this is. That’s what the Grammys will be; that’s what my next phase for Justin is. This is the way I found him: I found him with a guitar in his hand, so I want him to be seen that way.”

Don’t miss “Snooki & Sway: Live From the Grammys,” a red-carpet live stream kicking off Sunday at 6 p.m. ET on MTV.com. And stick with us all Grammy night for coverage of the red carpet, the show, the afterparties and beyond!

Jon M. Chu said to be working on version with new footage that may be released in theaters this month.

With a running time of one hour and 45 minutes, Justin Bieber’s “Never Say Never” packs in 3-D concert footage, home videos, behind-the-scenes looks, interviews with everyone from Snoop Dogg to the pop star’s vocal coach and extended, slow-motion shots of the 16-year-old shaking out his famous locks.

Perhaps, however, you didn’t get your fill of the kid — perhaps your Bieber Fever rages on. In which case, you might be in luck. New York magazine’s Vulture blog reports that Paramount Pictures is making plans for a director’s cut of the film, following its $29.5 million opening this past weekend.

Director Jon M. Chu is said to be working on an updated version of the movie, including new live performances, footage of Bieber at the “Never Say Never” premiere and various advance screenings, and potentially scenes shot at the Grammy Awards on Sunday. The studio is reportedly waiting for delivery of the re-cut film before deciding if it will be released in theaters late in February or as part of a special DVD.

MTV News’ request for comment to Paramount (which, like MTV News, is owned by Viacom) was not returned as of press time.

Box-office grosses for the concert film are likely to decline in the coming weeks, following Bieber fans’ initial pilgrimage to multiplexes during opening weekend, and the re-cut film could dramatically boost its B.O. bottom line. If the new version does hit theaters, it will likely be as a 3-D-only release, as the cost of releasing digital prints is significantly less than printing and shipping film prints. A final decision on a release will be made once Chu finishes the cut after returning from international premieres in London and Paris.

Outkast MC freshens up the pop star’s Cannibal cut with rare feature.

It seems the only way to find spankin’-new Andre 3000 lyrics these days is on the odd remix, and the ATLien definitely picked a left-of-center choice for his latest feature.

On Friday (January 14), a remix of Ke$ha’s Cannibal track “Sleazy” hit the Web, outfitted with some brand-new bars from the elusive Outkast MC. The southern spitter uses the revamp to muse about a young kid dealing with a deadbeat dad over the song’s bouncy thump.

“We start out so cute in our baby pictures/ That mama shot for our daddy so that he wouldn’t forget you/ He forgot anyway, but hey, one day he’ll remember/ If not, he’s human, I’m human, you human, we’ll forgive him,” he spits.

After sounding off about daddy issues, Stacks then rhymes about his playful relationship with the glitter-friendly poptress.

“I call her Keisha, she like it because it’s hood to her/ She call me Andre 6000 because I’m good to her,” he says.

The remix follows a slew of random guest appearances on records by everyone from DJ Unk to Rich Boy as fans await another full-length release from ‘Dre. Back in 2008, the Love Below lyricist broke down his affinity for jumping on the occasional remix to MTV News, explaining that cooking up another quality solo record is no easy task.

“I’ve been doing remixes here and there, and let me tell you, thank God for remixes. I wanna tell everybody who’s been checking out the remixes and things like the John Legend song ['Green Light']: In this day and age, those are the things that have kind of been keeping me alive. Because it takes me awhile to record albums,” he said. “I have to kind of build up something to say.”

What do you think of Andre 3000′s verse on Ke$ha’s “Sleazy” remix? Let us know in the comments!

Justin Timberlake also wanted to sign Bieber, ‘Never Say Never’ star said in 2009.

Just as the world was learning who Justin Bieber was, MTV News caught up with the shaggy-haired singer in September 2009. He was gearing up to release his debut album, My World, and plotting his pop-world domination. In the year and a half since that interview, Bieber has done the nearly impossible, launching himself into the pop mega-sphere.

In the chat, Bieber recalled how he and his manager, Scooter Braun, met and eventually got big names interested in signing the teen.

“My manager found me on YouTube. He flew me out to Atlanta for the first time — I’d never actually been on a plane before. He flew me to Atlanta where i was going to the studio to meet some people,” he recalled.

“And Usher happened to roll up in his Range Rover. I ran up to him, and I was like, ‘Usher, I love your songs. Want me to sing you one?’ The politest possible way he could say no, he did. … I took the hint. I didn’t get to sing for him: He had to run into a studio session.”

But later, Usher was beckoning the teen back to the ATL. “He actually watched my videos — after my manager got to talking to him — and was like, ‘I should have let this kid sing,’ and flew me back to Atlanta where I got to sing for him in a proper setting. A week later, I had a meeting with Justin Timberlake, who also wanted to sign me, so they both kind of wanted me.”

As the story goes, Bieber went with Usher, and the two never looked back.

“As far as Usher being my mentor, he’s definitely given me words of wisdom. I hear it from everybody, but definitely to hear it from Usher is great, just to stay humble and grounded is very important,” he explained.

“There’s a lot of people, especially young stars, that have gone down the wrong path, and I definitely plan to stay humble and stay grounded and keep my family first, because that stuff really is important in life.”

On Friday, Justin Bieber’s 3-D documentary, “Never Say Never,” opens. The film takes a look at how the teen star worked to hit it big. MTV News has been chatting with him along the way, from the time he first burst on the scene in 2009 until now, as he embarks on a huge 2011 that will include a tour and more new music.

The ‘Gossip Girl’ star gets her party on with ‘Front Cut,’ a new track that just hit the Internet.

For a while there it seemed like Leighton Meester was only going to be “Country Strong,” but now she’s again embracing her dance-club music roots on a new track. On Tuesday, a new Meester tune titled “Front Cut” hit the Web.

The “Gossip Girl” star’s track, a certain club banger that could easily be confused with any song in Ke$ha’s dance-heavy discography, features the writing, production and vocal talents of Clinton Sparks.

“I’m too fly to be all up in this line, boy/ I should get a front cut/ I should get a front cut,” Meester proclaims in the opening lines of the song — which is all about getting key access to a slamming party — before some killer keyboards and heavy beats kick in. She goes on to rap/sing, “You see me coming through/ Not just me, my girlfriends too/ You know what we came to do/ That’s why we in front of you.”

Meester really displays her swagga on the song’s bridge, when she goes on to sing, “Don’t tell me I gotta wait in the line/ I said f— the front door, I should go in through the side/ Why don’t you/ Lift up that rope to let through/ All these girls in my crew / Give me a drink or a few/ I mean a bottle or two/ We’ve been out here too damn long / And I hear Clint Sparks playin’ my song/ Got my diamond and my Louboutins on/ Ya better hurry up or I’ll be gone/ Don’t tell me I gotta wait in no line/ ‘Cause there’s plenty of other clubs that want me inside.”

With no official release date for the track or any definite plans for an album release, it seems that for now Meester fans will have to just enjoy the song online. The singer/actress’ pop-star career has been long-simmering, to say the least. She was expected to drop an album in 2010, but that never happened.

In 2009, she appeared on Cobra Starship’s “Good Girls Go Bad,” then she hooked up with Robin Thicke on the song “Somebody to Love.”

So what do you think of Meester’s new club banger? Share your opinions in the comments.

But is it here to stay? Our music-industry experts weigh in.
By Akshay Bhansali

Ke$ha
Photo: Andreas Rentz/ Getty Images

In 2010, pop princesses, R&B icons and chart-dominating newcomers all danced to the same beat. Not only did dance music go pop, but pop music caught the club-music bug.

Between Katy Perry’s “Firework,” Ke$ha’s “We R Who We R,” Rihanna’s “Only Girl (In the World),” Enrique Iglesias’ “I Like It,” Usher’s “DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love” and “OMG” and countless other singles, established artists definitely looked to dance beats for surefire hits. And two of this year’s biggest success stories in music were Jason Derülo and Taio Cruz; could there be a soul left in this country who hasn’t heard “Dynamite” or “In My Head”?

The love went both ways, with dance music’s biggest stars finding mainstream success this year. Dance-music maestro deadmau5 took up house-artist duties at this year’s VMAs, and Swedish House Mafia and Usher teamed up for a medley of their gems at the American Music Awards.

So how did this happen? We caught up with some music-industry experts to get their takes.

“You definitely saw tempos go up this year,” Jon Caramanica of The New York Times told MTV News. “And I think what you had are a lot of producers who are really familiar with nightclub stuff. They are familiar with Europe. Things are happening on a more global scale now.”

“I think everything from Europe, and sometimes even Asia, it comes to America, and we just adopt things a little bit slower,” said Jared Eng of JustJared.com. “I think it was just a change. People like different types of music at different times. And dance was of this moment.”

Noah Callahan of Complex magazine added: “I think 2010 saw the merging of the pop and dance genres. Pop artists realized that there were best practices that could be borrowed from dance music. And, ultimately, [all] pop music that has been made in the past 20 years had ended up being remixed for the club by dance artists. I think they basically just cut out the middleman and went straight there.”

Dance music being introduced into the hip-hop and R&B realms was particularly notable this year.

“I think David Guetta kind of at the end of last year and the beginning of this year spearheaded it,” said freelance writer Julianne Escobedo Shepherd. “He produced a lot of tracks. I think as trends go, people revile ‘unst-unst.’ But it’s just coming back around. Big-room techno was a way for people to get decadent in a year that no one could get decadent.”

“You have someone like will.i.am, who’s like, ‘Well, I spent all this time in Ibiza, and this is what they are doing,’ and he wants to find a way to bring that into his music,” Caramanica said of the Black Eyed Peas mastermind. “R&B especially became dance music. And especially with your Jason Derülos, Taio Cruzes. Guys like that would have literally been blocked at the border two years ago. That would not have made it through customs. And now all of a sudden they have #1 songs. I think will.i.am had a lot to do with that last year.”

Elliott Wilson of RapRadar.com added: “It’s actually even affected hip-hop. I was talking to Q-Tip, and his next record, I feel like that’s gonna kind of go in that vein. I know that was also Jay-Z’s thought process with Blueprint 3 at first, that he wanted to make a little bit more of a world music [vibe], a little more dancey. I think the kids today want to go to the clubs. They wanna have a good time. They wanna dance. So I think the artists of today are trying to kind of feed that audience.”

“I think it’s caught on this year because the people who’ve done it have been successful,” offered Clover Hope of Vibe magazine. “Like ‘OMG,’ with usher, he didn’t have success until he made a dance record. He had ‘There Goes My Baby’ and these really, like, adult-contemporary records that didn’t really catch on. And then once you see that everybody is doing it and that people are liking it, they are like, ‘OK, let me just try this out.’ It’s like Auto-Tune. Like, ‘Let me see what I sound like on a record by David Guetta.’ They end up liking it and doing more of it.”

So does the club-music trend have staying power. According to our tastemakers, not so much.

“I do think it’s a blip,” Caramanica said. “I don’t think that’s gonna be something that lasts in America. I think this is gonna be a moment we’ll all look back on and go, ‘Wasn’t that weird when Jason Derülo and Taio Cruz had #1 records?”

“At some point, these R&B artists will get kind of sick of it and be like, ‘Let me go back to my soul background,’ ” Hope said. “When you actually have to say something, dance doesn’t really lend itself to substance. And I think that R&B artists, they really want to talk about love and in a deep way, and to do that, you need to do, like, a soul or a traditional R&B record. I want to say that it’s kind of a fad.”

“I think music is very cyclical,” Eng offered. “So I think dance music might be here for a little bit, but I’m sure it will phase out at some point.”

Wilson called dance music “the sound of today. I think that people want more aggressive, faster beats, and I think that that probably has legs until at least next summer.”

Black Eyed Peas perform during the Super Bowl XLV halftime show
Photo: Getty Images

The Black Eyed Peas promised a party at the Super Bowl halftime show on Sunday (February 6), and the pop supernovas definitely delivered, with a performance teeming with lights, dancers and surprise appearances from celebrity pals.

Following a Chatter.com commercial that showed animated versions of the Peas showing off their social-media skills, the group kicked things off with their 2009 smash “I Gotta Feeling,” descending from the ceiling on illuminated platforms onto a stage surrounded by a cluster of dancers clad in white bodysuits. The foursome led the team of fist-pumping troops in “Tron”-like getups, with Taboo sporting an outfit covered in flashing lights, will.i.am rocking a shiny hairpiece, Apl.de.ap wearing huge bright studs and Fergie vamping it up in bling-laden shoulder pads.

When the speaker-busting bass of “Boom Boom Pow” dropped, the dancers dispersed across the field to create arrow-shaped formations as the glow-in-the-dark lights on their suits illuminated the stadium. Then rumored surprise guest Slash of Guns N’ Roses rose from below the stage for a “Sweet Child O’ Mine” duet with Fergie. The GNR great rocked a finger-searing solo in a studded version of his signature black top hat as more angular platforms and dancers moved across the gridiron. The platforms were bearing scores of marching-band musicians who blasted their horns and pounded away on their drums as the Peas went into “Pump It” and blue lights splashed across the production.

Quick streams of fog heralded the arrival of the Peas’ second surprise guest, Usher, who swooped in on a long chain to bust out his will.i.am-assisted joint “OMG.” Rocking a sparkly collar on an otherwise all-white ensemble, the R&B hitmaker cranked out several counts of energetic choreography, enlivening moves from his “OMG” video and at one point jumping over Will and landing in a split.

A spray of pyro ushered in the collective’s breakout 2003 hit “Where Is the Love?” as the oddly shaped platforms spelled out the word “Love” in bright-red letters. The team of dancers, which appeared to have multiplied to over 100, formed hearts across the field as will updated the lyrics of the smash with lines like, “Obama, let’s get these educated.”

Then the group jumped ahead to their most recent single, 2010′s “The Time (Dirty Bit),” as several back up hoofers rocking cubed helmets joined the Peas onstage and dancers lined up along the gridiron to simultaneously bust out the Running Man, a move which drew cheers from the crowd.

The platinum-selling Peas wrapped up the performance with a reprise of “I Gotta Feeling,” as the quartet triumphantly signed off amid of blitz of fog, firepower and flashing lights.

Ripping the halftime show was clearly a touching moment for will, who tweeted beforehand, “Me and apl started the peas when we were 16 yesterday we were dreamin now were livin it. Wow. I’m not crying out of sadness or nervousness its joy and pride and memories and the journey.”

And once the crew left the stage, the frontman was not only proud, but pumped. “That was so freakin sick,” he wrote. “Wow…!!!”

Britney Spears in “Hold It Against Me”
Photo: Jive

Britney Spears is rocking some over-the-top, edgy styles in her “Hold It Against Me” video, which premiered Thursday (February 17) on MTV and MTV.com. For her stylish looks, Spears turned to B. Åkerlund (wife of “HIAM” director Jonas Åkerlund), who has worked with some of the biggest names in the game, including fellow pop superstars Lady Gaga and Madonna.

Check out photos of Britney’s “Hold It Against Me” style.

B. Åkerlund gave Brit a totally unique edge and MTV News decided to get some inside dish from the stylist about how she came up with the various costumes, which range from ultra-glam to rocker chic.

“We were going for a punk-rock couture look in this video, with a touch of glam,” Åkerlund explained, adding that she had a very specific vision in mind for the clip.

B. Åkerlund worked with Tom Tom fashions for Spears’ giant, custom-made white wedding gown. They used Swarovski crystals for the “arm creations” and La Cracia gloves provided an added accessory; the necklace is by Dannijo. The gown appears several times throughout the clip, but gets destroyed when Spears smears neon paint on it during the dubstep break before collapsing to the ground.

For the fight scene, both Spears and her Spears double wear custom dresses, also by B. Åkerlund, in collaboration with Falguni and Shane Peacock. The pop star also shows off killer stiletto shoes by XTC. One version of Britney wears a deep-purple version of the bandage dress with flowing train, while the other Britney wears it in deep red.

During her dance sequence, Brit wears an outfit created by B. Åkerlund and Skin Graft Designs, with jewelry by Tom Binns. The boots are Britney’s own and completely bedazzled with Swarovski crystals. This particular look seems to be a nod to Spears’ dance roots thanks to a bustier top that’s reminiscent of a sports bra and little booty shorts.

For the microphone sequence, Spears rocks a red look described as “skull shoulders,” designed by Yasmen Hussein for Swarovski Runway Rocks. She completes the ultra-sleek look with earrings and a necklace by Tom Binns and rings by Loree Rodkin.

And for the finale scene, while confetti falls from the rafters, Spears wears a custom skintight black dress by Bordelle, complete with garters. She accessorizes the look with a necklace by Noir and boots, which it turns out, are also Britney’s own and decorated with Swarovski crystals.

Which of Britney’s “HIAM” looks is your favorite? Tell us in the comments!

DAS Communications’ lawyer claims producer Dr. Luke convinced her to breach contract.
By Jocelyn Vena

Ke$ha

Ke$ha is being sued by her former managers at DAS Communications for upwards of $14 million, Ken Freundlich, who is representing DAS in the case, confirmed to MTV News.

“DAS was Ke$ha’s manager since the beginning of 2006, and there was a written agreement, and they worked closely, and sometime in September 2008 [producer] Dr. Luke, for his own personal gain, somehow induced her to breach that contract,” Freundlich said. “And she unceremoniously terminated DAS without justification and then ended up with Luke, basically. So we sued Ke$ha for breach of contract and Luke for interference, and that was last year, and the defense’s reaction was to try and delay us. They made motions.

“The judge denied all their motions, and now we’re going forward. We’re going to have our day in court,” he continued. “And we’re going to prove that Dr. Luke induced her to breach the contract. She had no right to do so, and we’re gonna get damages from her.”

Freundlich explained how he and his team came to the $14 million sum, explaining, “We don’t know exactly how much, but we assume it’s in that range. She’s been quite successful. The case is set. It’s gonna go on the rest of this year. We’re gonna go straight to the trial if we have to.”

Ke$ha has filed a suit in California against the management team, but Freundlich is confident nothing will come of her claim that they acted as an “illegal talent agent.” “That’s pending out in California. Even though that case is still pending, I don’t think it has any merit,” he said.

Calls to Ke$ha’s legal team and rep were not returned to MTV News by press time.

Lady Gaga performs at the Grammys on Sunday

Madonna’s people e-mailed their ‘love and complete support,’ Gaga tells Jay Leno.
By Gil Kaufman

Lady Gaga on Monday’s “Tonight Show With Jay Leno”

After a number of fans and critics pointed out the similarities between Lady Gaga‘s smash new single “Born This Way” and a few of Madonna’s songs (including “Express Yourself” and “Vogue”), Gaga went on “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno” on Monday to say that she’s gotten the Material Girl’s stamp of approval.

Twenty-four hours after Gaga wowed the Grammy audience with her space-egg entrance, Leno asked the singer how she felt about the many comparisons to Madonna’s work. Mother Monster assured him that there is no beef between her and Madonna over the song.

“There is really no one that is a more adoring and loving Madonna fan than me,” said Gaga, who furthered the controversy during her Grammy performance by rocking a long blond ponytail that also recalled a classic Madonna look. “I am the hugest fan personally and professionally.”

In fact, Gaga said she recently got a note from Madonna, who said she liked the song and had no problem with the homage. “Well, the good news is that I got an e-mail from her people and her, sending me their love and complete support on behalf of the single, and if the queen says it shall be, then it shall be,” she said.

Gaga, who picked up three Grammy awards on Sunday night, appeared on Leno’s show wearing a gauzy black dress over a visible black bra and panties and a black head scarf, accessorized with a black vinyl Batman-like mask, as well as what appears to be her new monster-movie inspired look, complete with glued-on facial ridges. She displayed her three Grammys on Leno’s desk and, as a Valentine’s Day treat, crammed them with M&M’s, the talk-show host’s favorite candy.

“I think today in music, the freedom in the song, the sort of R&B, early-’90s vibe that it has, it’s so full of love and spirit, and I think it’s the spirit that people are reacting to the most,” said Gaga of her already hit single. “I just want everyone to rejoice and celebrate and be unafraid to be happy with music. It doesn’t always have to be so dark. It doesn’t always have to be so sexy. Sometimes it’s wonderful just to celebrate life and go to church with it.”

Pop singer plays a dirty Disney princess in online parody.

Ke$ha in Funny or Die’s “Disney’s Princess Ke$ha” video
Photo: Funny Or Die

Ever wonder what it would be like if Disney gave Ke$ha her very own movie? Well wonder no more, since the folks over at Funny or Die have dreamed up a new Ke$ha-starring satire, “Disney’s Princess Ke$ha.”

The clip opens with Ke$ha in a castle bedroom addressing her animated pals, complaining about her alarm clock waking her up. “Oh that clock. What a killjoy,” she says as she stares out of her window in the castle tower. Just as she begins singing a very Disney melody, she proclaims it “gross” and says “f— it,” before kicking off a signature Ke$ha-style tune, complete with her rap-sing style and club-ready beat.

“Time to get the day going/ Dress it up to the nines/ Yo, critter crew/ Make Princess Ke$ha look fine,” she sings. “Add a little pinch of magic from my fairy-tale life and off we go.” Then she goes into the chorus: “I’m getting ready so nice / I’m getting customized.”

The pop star is later catapulted into the real world. In an alley, she meets up with an animated rat, a pumpkin and a cross-dressing hobo fairy godmother. The rat and pumpkin are transformed into a shopping cart and a man who take off with Ke$ha.

This is the singer’s second appearance on the site. Last November she appeared in a clip where she jokingly explained “The Story of the $.”

“I used to be Kesha with an S, instead of a dollar sign, and then one year I had my birthday party at Shakey’s Pizza,” she said in the clip. “On the sign, the big sign where they write ‘Happy birthday,’ they replaced the S with a dollar sign. It ruined my life. I wanted to be a CPA, but you know who H&R Block doesn’t hire? People with dollar signs in their name. I pretty much had to be a pop star.”

Justin Bieber appears on “CSI”
Photo: CBS

Beliebers, get ready for another dose of Justin Bieber as mischievous Jason McCann on a second episode of “CSI,” which airs Thursday on CBS. In a behind-the-scenes video, the “Never Say Never” singer discusses his return to the crime series, reaction to his first episode and his dream acting role with Will Ferrell.

As teased in January, Bieber’s character is back to his old habits as he continues on a dangerous and downward spiral. “It started in the first one where I bombed a funeral. Yeah, it sounds bad, but I bombed a funeral,” he says of his debut episode. And it doesn’t stop there, as the Biebs reveals that his character continues a bombing scheme in the follow-up cameo.

Asked why the singer chose “CSI” for his acting debut last September, JB admitted he’s a fan and ultimately wanted to choose a role that would test his acting skills. “First of all, I think it’s a really cool show. I like the show myself,” the star said. “I wanted to do something that’s going to be challenging for me, and it’s definitely going to be. It has been.”

In between his commentary, clips of the episode are shown, including one where a bruised Bieber is reunited with Nick Stokes (George Eads) and the “CSI” team member tells the youngster that he’ll protect him despite the circumstances.

While the pop star is known for his swooping hair and adolescent charm, Bieber enjoyed his role as the troubled McCann, saying, “I’m not a bad person, so it’s funny to play a bad person.” And he wasn’t the only one, as the star said his family was “really excited” to watch his first stint on the show, including his grandpa, who is an avid fan of all the “CSI” spin-offs. “He was really happy to see me and it was really fun,” the singer said.

Bieber may not be around to live another day on the CBS series, so what dream role would he like to flex his acting chops on next? “To do a comedy with Will Ferrell like play his son or something like that,” a grinning Bieber said, adding, “What’s up, Will?”

Will you tune in for Justin’s return to “CSI”? Tell us in the comments!

Justin Bieber may have declined the chance to join Justin Timberlake’s label, but according to a songwriter in the know, the former ‘NSYNC crooner is the inspiration for the teen sensation’s upcoming album.

Songwriter Sean “The Pen “Garrett, who has been working with Bieber on the follow-up to the chart-ruling My World 2.0., spoke with Billboard about the direction for the teen superstar’s forthcoming album, saying the project will feature more grown-up fare.

“What we’re trying to do with Justin is to segue him into young adulthood,” Garrett said of the project, which is also slated to feature production from hitmaker Christopher “Tricky” Stewart. “The one great thing about Justin Bieber is the fact that his fans are going to grow with him. So we want all the fans that started out with him to still be intrigued and excited about him, but we want to also stretch out a little bit and make the fans that are 22-23 years old love Justin as well. When Justin Timberlake went from the last album of *N Sync to his first solo album — I want to say [we're aiming for] that level. That’s the bar for the type of song, that level of ‘Cry Me a River,’ big records.”

Garrett, who has crafted records for stars like Chris Brown and Bieber’s mentor Usher, also said he’s hard at work on Beyoncé’s next project. However, the songwriter didn’t divulge too much information, only revealing that he’s “been working with her extremely hard … she’s my favorite.”

While Garrett said the plan for his next outing is to angle Bieber toward a swiftly maturing audience, Bieber himself has refused to categorize his music, insisting to MTV News in December that he’s just focused on creating quality records.

“Whatever comes out of my mouth is just what you guys are going to hear,” Bieber explained of his hits. “I don’t know, it’s not a specific type of music. Whatever music I write, I wouldn’t say I’m pop or R&B or country or anything: I would just say it’s just good music,”

While the jury’s still out on whether or not Justin Bieber has a Valentine (we’re looking at you, Selena Gomez!), the pop star did reveal to MTV News how he planned on celebrating the most romantic day of the year. Hint: It involves his very, very loyal fans.

“On Valentine’s Day, I don’t know, I think I’ll be in L.A.,” he said. “So, I might go to a random movie theater [playing 'Never Say Never'] and surprise my fans. I think I’m just gonna do one.”

Bieber actually kicked off the V-Day festivities over the weekend by surprising contest winners at select screenings of the flick. On Friday, the day the movie hit theaters, he tweeted about the appearances, “See! The crew with me to surprise theatres….we are grateful and excited. hope u are enjoying the movie – #NSN3D.”

And on Saturday, he tweeted, “About to surprise another theatre with the crew!! U support us so we support u. Thank U! Let’s shock the world #NSN3D. … Gonna head out and surprise some more theatres for #NSN3D – u support us so it only makes sense we support u. #thatslove.”

Then on Sunday, before his Grammy Awards performance, he made one more pre-show theater appearance. “Yes [there] are GOLDEN TICKETS at Fandango.com and MovieTickets.com – by seeing #NSN3D u could win a movie date with me,” he wrote. “Pick u up at 7? ;)

He didn’t disappoint, as evidenced by the video he posted on Twitter of the encounter. “Me and the last golden ticket winner. #shameless i know. Lol,” he wrote of the clip in which he and a fan named Lily exchange a hug and slow dance.

Before heading to the Grammys he had this final reminder for his fans, “Who is in? take the fam…take the friends…spread the word and let’s shock the world….make it a sunday afternoon #NEVERSAYNEVERSUNDAY.”

While Willow Smith is the one who made music headlines with “Whip My Hair” last year, it’s her brother, “Karate Kid” actor Jaden Smith, who will take the stage at the upcoming 53rd Grammy Awards in a special performance alongside Usher and Justin Bieber, with whom he collaborated on the song “Never Say Never” last summer.

The trio joins a list of new performers added to the show on Thursday (January 20) that will also include another power trifecta made up of B.o.B, Bruno Mars and Janelle Monáe, according to a press release from the Recording Academy announcing the additions to the February 13 telecast from the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Also taking the stage next month will be nominees Muse and Lady Antebellum. They will join a roster of previously announced performers that includes Eminem, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Arcade Fire, Cee Lo Green and Miranda Lambert. It will be the first time on the Grammy performance stage for Bieber, B.o.B, Lambert, Mars, Monáe, Muse and Smith. Eminem, Green, Gaga, Perry, Usher and Lady Antebellum will be making return visits for the occasion.

While 11-time Grammy winner Eminem leads the pack in nominations this year (with 10 nods), Mars has seven nominations, and Gaga and Lady Antebellum are not far behind with six nods each. B.o.B has notched five, Perry and Green are each up for four, and Arcade Fire and Lambert are vying for three awards. Bieber, Muse, Usher and Monáe are each nominated for two Grammys.

No details of the collaborative performances were released, but the Grammy announcement promised a rare, never-before-seen event for the Mars, B.o.B and Monáe segment.

With the addition of Antebellum, all five Album of the Year nominees (Eminem, Arcade Fire, Gaga, Perry) are now scheduled to perform on the show. Additional performers, presenters and special segments will be announced soon.

MTV News takes a look back on the long road to single’s release.

For Lady Gaga fans, the road to the release of “Born This Way” has been long. With teases for months now, Gaga’s dedicated Little Monsters finally get to hear the song, from her May release of the same name. Before you hit play and listen to the song on repeat, MTV News takes a look back at the months of anticipation for the release.

Gaga first got the buzz started in September. While wearing a dress made entirely of meat, she got up onstage at the VMAs and not only announced the album title, but also sang a bit of the song for fans.

Soon, details about the album were emerging, but little was known about the title track until January 1, when she announced that she would be releasing the song February 13. Her longtime collaborator, RedOne, spoke to MTV News weeks later to reveal that the song is “so beautiful, and Gaga is very special to all of us — to the world.”

Later that month, Gaga initially teased fans with a few lyrics from the song before giving up the full lyrics — revealing an anthem about equality for everyone, regardless of race, creed or sexuality.

“It is a very gay song — unapologetically, gay-in-your-face gay — but it’s also a universal song that can relate to everyone,” pal Perez Hilton told MTV News. “To all of us outsiders, to all of us freaks, to all of us who feel different. And the music is undeniable. It sounds like a smash. It is a smash. It is one of the best songs of Gaga’s career.”

As February 13 quickly approached, Gaga decided to treat her fans and release the track two days earlier than expected. She even shared the artwork for the track.

By the time the song was released, Lady Gaga was gracing the cover of Vogue and sharing with her fans her process for writing the track.

“I wrote ['Born This Way'] in 10 f—ing minutes,” she explains in the article. “And it is a completely magical message song. And after I wrote it, the gates just opened, and the songs kept coming. It was like an immaculate conception.”

The French press reports that the Oscar-winning actress has accepted a role in director Christopher Nolan’s next “Batman” movie.

Are Christopher Nolan’s “Inception” dreams still haunting him as he turns his focus to casting “The Dark Knight Rises”? Following the signing of Tom Hardy to play the villain Bane in the next installment of the “Batman” franchise and news that Joseph Gordon-Levitt was in talks to join the production, new reports suggest a third star of Nolan’s dream-world thriller could well land in Gotham City, too.

According to stories originating in the French press, Marion Cotillard is set to join “Dark Knight Rises.” People magazine, citing unnamed sources, contends that the Oscar-winning actress, who is pregnant and expecting a baby in the spring with French actor/director Guillaume Canet, signed on to the film on Saturday in Paris.

A rep for Cotillard told The Hollywood Reporter that the actress is “in discussions, but nothing has been confirmed yet.”

MTV News’ request for comment to Warner Bros. was not returned as of press time.

There has long been talk that “The Dark Knight Rises” would rope in two central female characters. Anne Hathaway has already hopped aboard the production to play Selina Kyle, the well-known character in comics lore who is the alter-ego of Catwoman. Previous reports about actresses in contention for the film did not mention Cotillard; the names included Hathaway, Keira Knightley, Jessica Biel, Kate Mara and Charlotte Riley. The rumored second female role has not yet been filled, unless the Cotillard reports prove true.

According to People‘s sources, the French-born actress will begin shooting in London in mid-June — after the birth of her child — before traveling to Pittsburgh and Los Angeles this summer for further filming.

Nolan’s third “Batman” flick, widely expected to be his last, “The Dark Knight Rises” will likely begin production in the spring with an eye on a July 20, 2012, release date.

Check out everything we’ve got on “The Dark Knight Rises.”

Esperanza Spalding accepts the Grammy for Best New Artist
Photo: Michael Caulfield/WireImage

With household names like Justin Bieber, Drake, Florence and the Machine and even Mumford & Sons all battling it out for Best New Artist at the Grammy Awards, it was an unexpected victory for Esperanza Spalding, who nabbed the prize.

Donning a lime green halter gown with pink shoes, the jazz chanteuse took the stage and graciously accepted her prize, after passing Drake on the way. “I know I don’t have a lot of time, so first, thank you to the academy for even nominating me in this category,” she said. “Thank you to the incredible community and family of musicians I’m so blessed to be a part of… my friends in Portland, all my teachers, colleagues… my beautiful family who’s here,” she continued, before naming names.

The smiling award-winner stated that she had every intention of using this opportunity to continue making music that she felt her friends, fans and family would be proud of. “I take this honor to heart so sincerely, and I’ll do my damndest to make a whole lot of great music for all of you,” she gushed. “It’s such a blessing and an honor. God bless. Thank you.”

While most thought the Best New Artist would be landing in the hands of Drake, Bieber or Florence, Spalding came out from behind thanks to a strong following in the jazz community. In 2010 she released several albums including Reencontro and Chamber Music Society, and she also joined Prince for select dates on his Welcome 2 America Tour.

‘My fans have made me a trending topic every day,’ Bieber marvels to MTV News in April 2010.

In April 2010, Justin Bieber sat down with MTV News to dish about his devoted fanbase. His Beliebers, at the time, were keeping him at the top of the Twitter trends daily. Those fans were the ones who believed in him before he became the megastar he is today.

When he sat down with us all those months ago, Bieber seemed grateful for their love and support.

“They make me a trending topic on Twitter every day,” Bieber marveled. “It’s pretty incredible. My fans have made me a trending topic every day. I don’t think there’s been a day in the past month that I haven’t. So it’s pretty incredible.”

The singer — who is still one of the most devout celeb users of the social-networking site — said he loved using the site to stay connected to his fans. “I love Twitter,” Bieber said. “I use it for being able to interact with my fans as well as promote stuff.”

To this day, Bieber frequently tweets and retweets messages for his fans, noting that there’s no science as to who he picks. “It just depends. It’s kind of, like, it’s random,” he said. “It’s not really anyone specifically. It’s just kind of a random thing.

“They’re like, ‘I never thought you were gonna respond!’ ” he added. “And I say, ‘You thought wrong.’ ”

The singer/songwriter says his next effort should be released ‘by August.’

If anybody knows that the world isn’t perfect, it’s singer/songwriter The-Dream. Last year, the man behind hit songs by everyone from Mariah Carey (“Touch My Body”) to Rihanna (“Umbrella”) said he was retiring as an artist, vowing to abide by a threat he’d been teasing about for some time.

“It’s the last album, period,” The-Dream told MTV News with regard to his Love King project. “I really would like it to be the last one if I could — in a perfect world.”

Things haven’t exactly gone smooth for The-Dream since that time. He divorced singer/actress Christina Milian amid allegations of adultery and revealed that he thought about suicide during the aftermath of the breakup.

But now, the Grammy-winning producer has revealed that he is hard at work on a new solo effort.

“Everybody’s calling for an album now, so I should have one out by August,” The-Dream told former MTV host Quddus on Wednesday before the Los Angeles premiere of Justin Bieber’s new movie, “Never Say Never.”

As of press time, no album title or release date had been confirmed by The-Dream’s label, Def Jam Records. The singer, whose own credits include “Nikki,” “Rockin’ That Thang” and “Make Up Bag,” also was hush regarding details.

The-Dream did reveal to Quddus that he’s working on Bieber’s next record, along with Danja, Kevin Cossom and Kanye West.

“I’ve been writing, just to get ready,” he said about the teen sensation’s upcoming effort. He teased that the sound of the new material was “somewhere between Fergie and Jesus, somewhere in between there. If I can get away with edgy, I would love it.”

The-Dream also recently hit the studio with reality star Kim Kardashian, with whom he recorded the catchy single “Turn It Up.”

Are you excited that The-Dream is working on a new album and collaborating with Justin Bieber? Tell us in the comments.
