The ‘O.M.G.’ singer looks forward to sharing the stage with his protégé on Sunday night.

HOLLYWOOD — At Sunday’s 53rd Grammy Awards, Usher will be pulling double duty as both a nominee and a performer. Of course, given the massive year he just completed — with the success of his smash single “O.M.G.” and as a mentor to rising phenom Justin Bieber — Ush’s Grammy plans seem rather fitting.

Especially since he’ll be performing with Bieber (and Bieber’s pal Jaden Smith), a move that’s just as much about celebrating Usher’s successes as it is the successes of his young protégé.

“Having been through [the Grammys] so many times, you couldn’t want for anything more than for your young protégé to have the opportunity to have one, so, in support of him having his moment, I wanted to be here,” Usher told MTV News on Thursday, hours before his performance at the (Belvedere) RED launch party in Hollywood. “And also to be there to perform, to kind of tell the story of how we came together. This music business has definitely been good to both of us, and this year we have a lot to be happy for.”

And just how will the dynamic duo tell that story? Well, Usher wasn’t about to reveal all the details, but he did say that he’s hoping their performance will show another side of Bieber … a side most tend to overlook.

“The performance will be fun,” Usher explained. “We want to get up there and just do what we do. Be comfortable, and have a great time. … This is kind of a crossover for Justin. Having performed on so many different stages, this is the way that I wanted him to be seen and an opportunity to show the industry — a lot of the industry, that didn’t believe [in him] — some of his other talents. He’s going to play acoustically, and also, we’ll get down a little bit.”

And though Ush is up for a pair of Grammy awards on Sunday — Best Male R&B Vocal Performance and Best Contemporary R&B Album for Raymond v. Raymond — he’s most looking forward to sharing the stage with Bieber and giving fans a look at where the young artist will be heading next.

“I’m very proud, man. I definitely saw it from the beginning, but thanks to the team that we have around us, it was made to happen. And that story has only just begun,” Usher said. “The story of Justin Bieber doesn’t stop with screaming girls; we need screaming fans all around the world … a cultural experience that’s much more than just fanfare. And that’s what this is. That’s what the Grammys will be; that’s what my next phase for Justin is. This is the way I found him: I found him with a guitar in his hand, so I want him to be seen that way.”

The only dress code for the Oscars is glamour, and this year’s red carpet certainly brought the dazzle. With lace and va va voom ruling the night, two celebrities in particular are guaranteed to have fashionistas buzzing around the water cooler on Monday morning. “Black Swan” star Natalie Portman and “True Grit” actress Hailee Steinfeld pumped up the glam on the carpet.

For photos of all the stars on the Oscar red carpet, click here.

Oscar nominee Portman (and her ever-expanding baby bump) hit the carpet in a deep-purple off-the-shoulder billowy silk chiffon gown with sequin detailing by “Black Swan” costumers Rodarte. She completed the look with tassel earrings by Tiffany & Co.

Purple was a hot color on the carpet, with Portman’s “Black Swan” co-star Mila Kunis dazzling in a lavender lace and silk organza gown by Elie Saab Haute Couture from the designer’s spring 2011 collection.

Amy Adams also rocked a purple shade, wearing a deep-violet, sparkly cap sleeve dress by L’Wren Scott, accessorized with an emerald drop necklace. Cate Blanchett looked like a warrior in a structured lavender gown with cut-out detailing by Givenchy Couture. Scarlett Johansson looked chic and relaxed rocking wavy hair and a see-through purple lace Dolce & Gabbana gown that was made even sexier thanks to the cut-out back.

Red was the other big color of the night. Oscar host Anne Hathaway hit the carpet in a strapless red ruffled gown with a large bustle. “Winter’s Bone” star and first-time nominee Jennifer Lawrence stunned on the carpet in a body-hugging, minimalist red dress by Calvin Klein Collection.

Oscar winner Sandra Bullock was sophisticated in her strapless red Vera Wang dress. And she may have just had a baby, but Penélope Cruz looked nothing less than “wow” in a red, beaded showstopper gown by L’Wren Scott. Jennifer Hudson also jumped on the red-hued bandwagon, looking svelte in a low-cut halter gown in orangey-red by Versace.

While color definitely ruled the carpet, not all of the stars went that route. Mandy Moore sparkled in a nude-color, off-the-shoulder dress by Monique Lhuillier, and Halle Berry looked ethereal in a feathery gown in a similar shade. Michelle Williams was still rocking the blond pixie cut, but this time she sparkled in a skintight nude-color cap-sleeve gown by Chanel.

Also opting for the pale trend was the Oscar nominee who’ll have everyone talking: 14-year-old Steinfeld, who opted for an age-appropriate, blush colored 3/4-length ballerina-esque tutu dress with a large tulle skirt by Marchesa; that starlet worked with the designers to design the look.

He could soon surpass the late Michael Jackson as the site’s overall most liked.

By his own admission, Eminem “doesn’t know how to work a computer,” but that hasn’t stopped him from overtaking Lady Gaga as the most “liked” living artist on Facebook.

Earlier this week, Em eclipsed Gaga to claim the title of Facebook’s most-liked, as he currently counts more than 28,975,000 fans to LG’s 28,926,000, according to Billboard. Eminem is currently averaging more than 500,000 Facebook “likes” a day, and could soon surpass none other than Michael Jackson to become the site’s overall most-liked artist, according to Famecount, a site that tallies the “top social network stars worldwide.” The late King of Pop currently has more than 29,183,000 Facebook fans, giving him a slight edge over the hard-charging Em.

Of course, when it comes to overall social influence, Eminem still trails both Gaga and Justin Bieber in total YouTube views — though he recently became the third artist to crack the 1-billion-view mark — and when it comes to total Twitter followers, his 3 million are barely enough to crack Famecount’s top 20 musicians: Gaga is #1, followed by the likes of Bieber, Britney Spears, Katy Perry, Rihanna and, uh, Jessica Simpson.

Then again, all signs seem to point to Eminem’s social media profile only increasing. He shows up in Dr. Dre’s much-anticipated “I Need a Doctor” video, which premiered on Thursday, and just last week, he grabbed headlines when on-set photos from his upcoming “Space Bound” video — featuring porn star Sasha Grey — began making the rounds … and just in case you were wondering, Grey has more than 110,000 Twitter followers of her own.

‘She’s gorgeous! Wow! Where were you when I was making pictures?’ movie icon says to Oscars host Anne Hathaway.

Hollywood veteran and icon Kirk Douglas stole the show early on in the 2011 Academy Awards broadcast. Aided by a walking cane, Douglas took the stage at the Kodak Theatre to present the award for Best Supporting Actress.

By the time he handed the Oscar to Melissa Leo, Douglas had flirted with Oscars host Anne Hathaway and managed to have the room in stitches by poking fun at Hugh Jackman and Colin Firth.

“Thank you very much,” he told the applauding audience. “And I want to thank James [Franco]. Thank you. You look much better out of the cave. And I want to thank Miss Hathaway. I thank you. She’s gorgeous! Wow! Where were you when I was making pictures? Jeez!”

His comments about the Hollywood star caused the audience to break out into laughter and Hathaway to send air kisses to Douglas in gratitude. He continued, ” I have something to confess. I love women and I really love beautiful women, and now I’m gonna give you five of them — the nominees for Best Supporting Actress.”

After the names of the nominees were announced — Leo for “The Fighter,” her co-star Amy Adams, Helena Bonham Carter for “The Kings’ Speech,” “True Grit” star Hailee Steinfeld and “Animal Kingdom” actress Jacki Weaver — the camera cut back to Douglas onstage, ready to announce the winner, or so the audience thought.

“Hello … now is the moment, the moment that we are all waiting for,” he teased. “Hugh Jackman is laughing. I don’t know why everybody in Australia thinks I’m funny. Colin Firth is not laughing. He’s British. Now we come to the most important part. This is the moment, if I can get it. You know you’re still laughing. Colin Firth is laughing. You know I will never forget this moment … now we have a winner.”

Douglas finally got around to announcing the winner. When Leo arrived onstage to collect her award, she bowed down on one knee before the movie icon.

While Willow Smith is the one who made music headlines with “Whip My Hair” last year, it’s her brother, “Karate Kid” actor Jaden Smith, who will take the stage at the upcoming 53rd Grammy Awards in a special performance alongside Usher and Justin Bieber, with whom he collaborated on the song “Never Say Never” last summer.

The trio joins a list of new performers added to the show on Thursday (January 20) that will also include another power trifecta made up of B.o.B, Bruno Mars and Janelle Monáe, according to a press release from the Recording Academy announcing the additions to the February 13 telecast from the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Also taking the stage next month will be nominees Muse and Lady Antebellum. They will join a roster of previously announced performers that includes Eminem, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Arcade Fire, Cee Lo Green and Miranda Lambert. It will be the first time on the Grammy performance stage for Bieber, B.o.B, Lambert, Mars, Monáe, Muse and Smith. Eminem, Green, Gaga, Perry, Usher and Lady Antebellum will be making return visits for the occasion.

While 11-time Grammy winner Eminem leads the pack in nominations this year (with 10 nods), Mars has seven nominations, and Gaga and Lady Antebellum are not far behind with six nods each. B.o.B has notched five, Perry and Green are each up for four, and Arcade Fire and Lambert are vying for three awards. Bieber, Muse, Usher and Monáe are each nominated for two Grammys.

No details of the collaborative performances were released, but the Grammy announcement promised a rare, never-before-seen event for the Mars, B.o.B and Monáe segment.

With the addition of Antebellum, all five Album of the Year nominees (Eminem, Arcade Fire, Gaga, Perry) are now scheduled to perform on the show. Additional performers, presenters and special segments will be announced soon.

Outkast MC freshens up the pop star’s Cannibal cut with rare feature.
By Mawuse Ziegbe

Andre 3000

It seems the only way to find spankin’-new Andre 3000 lyrics these days is on the odd remix, and the ATLien definitely picked a left-of-center choice for his latest feature.

On Friday (January 14), a remix of Ke$ha’s Cannibal track “Sleazy” hit the Web, outfitted with some brand-new bars from the elusive Outkast MC. The southern spitter uses the revamp to muse about a young kid dealing with a deadbeat dad over the song’s bouncy thump.

“We start out so cute in our baby pictures/ That mama shot for our daddy so that he wouldn’t forget you/ He forgot anyway, but hey, one day he’ll remember/ If not, he’s human, I’m human, you human, we’ll forgive him,” he spits.

After sounding off about daddy issues, Stacks then rhymes about his playful relationship with the glitter-friendly poptress.

“I call her Keisha, she like it because it’s hood to her/ She call me Andre 6000 because I’m good to her,” he says.

The remix follows a slew of random guest appearances on records by everyone from DJ Unk to Rich Boy as fans await another full-length release from ‘Dre. Back in 2008, the Love Below lyricist broke down his affinity for jumping on the occasional remix to MTV News, explaining that cooking up another quality solo record is no easy task.

“I’ve been doing remixes here and there, and let me tell you, thank God for remixes. I wanna tell everybody who’s been checking out the remixes and things like the John Legend song ['Green Light']: In this day and age, those are the things that have kind of been keeping me alive. Because it takes me awhile to record albums,” he said. “I have to kind of build up something to say.”

Singer cancels kick off date of European leg of his OMG Tour due to illness.
By Gil Kaufman

Usher was forced to delay the kick off of his European OMG Tour on Wednesday night in Berlin because of illness. In a statement released to fans, the singer apologized for the last-minute scratch, saying he felt he was suffering from a “sinus complication.” Although the gig was rescheduled for Thursday night at the O2 World arena in Berlin, his German fans apparently weren’t appeased by his effort.

“I am truly sorry to all my fans in Berlin who were inconvenienced by tonight’s postponement of the show,” the singer said in a statement about Wednesday’s aborted concert. “I was ill and felt that I would not have been able to give them the show that they properly deserve. … I am looking forward to performing tomorrow and giving Berliners a great show.”

According to the statement, the singer received treatment from doctors for a sinus issue that affected his balance, but a visibly still-ailing Usher was unable to finish the Thursday make-up show, reportedly abandoning the stage after just five songs.

On Friday (January 14), a follow-up statement from his spokesperson confirmed that he was too ill to play Thursday night’s Berlin date and has been forced to reschedule the next three dates on the tour as well. The Rotterdam show originally scheduled for this week has been moved to March 1 and a show in Antwerp, also slated for this week, has been bumped to March 7.

The statement also updated the singer’s condition: “Usher is suffering from upper respiratory illness, which is currently preventing him from performing a proper show. After consultation with doctors, he has been advised to reschedule the upcoming dates in order to get the rest he needs to ensure a complete recovery.”

Footage posted on YouTube that was purportedly taken at the make-up performance in Berlin shows Usher standing silently at the microphone seemingly unable to sing, with fans booing him at first and then chanting, “Usher, Usher,” as he approaches the microphone and apologizes to them for his struggles. “I appreciate your support,” he told the fans wearily.

“I have been very excited about my European Tour and I deeply regret having to reschedule the shows,” the singer said in the new statement. “I am truly sorry for any inconvenience I have caused my fans. My fans are the best in the world and I am looking forward to getting better so that I can give them the show they deserve.”

Usher wrapped up the North American leg of his tour in December and his overseas dates are slated to last through the spring.

The period drama seems poised to take the Best Picture crown once promised to ‘The Social Network.’
By Eric Ditzian

Colin Firth in “The King’s Speech”
Photo: Weinstein Company

If the 83rd Academy Awards had been held a month ago, shortly after the critics groups had doled out their prizes and the final glasses of champagne had been drained at the Golden Globes, “The Social Network” would almost certainly have nabbed Oscar’s Best Picture statue. After all, David Fincher’s film about the salacious founding of Facebook hardly encountered a critics group it didn’t woo and win over, before going on to earn four Globes, including Best Motion Picture – Drama. What could possibly stand between “Social Network” and the Academy’s top honor?

As it turns out, another month. And another biopic, this one telling a story that begins some 80 years ago and resembling a far more traditional Oscar film than Fincher’s exploration of youth and digital beauty. “The King’s Speech” bounced back from its Globe defeats (it nabbed just one of seven nominations, with Colin Firth taking top dramatic actor) and secured important wins from the Producers Guild of America, the Directors Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild.

So much for creating a big tent with the inclusion of 10 Best Picture nominees. Like last year, we find ourselves watching a two-horse race that, at this point, might not be all that close. Kudos to “Toy Story 3,” “Winter’s Bone” and “Inception,” but their nominations are kind of the equivalent of pity invites to a kid’s birthday party: Sure, the birthday boy was forced to request the pleasure of your company, but he’s not going to pretend you’re anything more than a seat-filler. Our man Oscar holds the most exclusive birthday party in Hollywood, and its voters like it that way.

What’s interesting this year is the nature of the two-horse race. In 2010, it came down to a decision between a populist fave in “Avatar” that made a gazillion dollars at the box office and a critics’ darling in “The Hurt Locker” that maybe six people saw in the theater. Both “Social Network” and “King’s Speech,” meanwhile, have almost identical box-office grosses and high-90s ratings at the Rotten Tomatoes review aggregator. The difference between the two is that “King’s Speech” is the kind of film that could have been an Oscar nominee a decade ago — or a half-century ago — whereas “Social Network,” in everything from story line to subtext to soundtrack, is directly plugged into 2011.

That’s not to suggest “King’s Speech” is some musty relic of yesteryear, nor that contemporary relevancy is a requirement for Oscar glory. The key, rather, is that the best film should win. And if you ask us, the finest film of the year is “Social Network.” But as in so many years past — from how “Gladiator” bested “Traffic” to the way “Shakespeare in Love” beat out, well, geez, take your pick! — the best film of the year doesn’t always receive that Oscar honor.

We can talk about momentum, we can indentify vital precursor wins, we can cite all manner of historical facts and we can lament fuddy-duddy voters. None of it seems to matter. On Sunday night, it appears, a very good film but hardly the year’s best will win Best Picture. Let’s offer our early congratulations to “The King’s Speech.”

Which Oscar contender should take Best Picture? Share your pick in the comments!

Bieber worked closely with hairstylist Vanessa Price on his new ‘do, which complements his ‘very soft hair.’
By James Montgomery

Justin Bieber gets his hair cut
Photo: TMZ

It is, unquestionably, one of the most important stories of our time: Justin Bieber’s decision to cut his gloriously swooping hairstyle into a close-cropped new ‘do, and the social ramifications thereof.

And while Bieber himself has declared that he “doesn’t really care” what folks think of his new look, that hasn’t stopped the media from digging deep, covering all the angles in an attempt to ascertain just why JB decided to deny us all the pleasure of gazing upon his famous locks.

The latest example of this comes from People magazine, which interviewed Bieber’s “longtime hairstylist” Vanessa Price and dared to ask her the toughest question of all: Why now?

“He was ready,” Price said. “Cutting your hair is just part of the evolution and growing process for anyone, and I think he was just ready.”

But perhaps grieving Bieber fans can take solace in the fact that this decision wasn’t made on the spot. Rather, JB had been considering the change for a while. It was, after all, a pretty big deal.

“We’ve been talking about it over the last six months or so, more or less,” Price said. “It’s definitely been in the works for a while.”

And once the decision to cut his hair was made, Price said that Bieber maintained a steely focus about just how he wanted his new ‘do to look. He worked closely with Price on the cut — his hair has always been a bit of a collaborative effort — and the end result is a haircut for the ages.

“Justin has always been clear about what he wants done. That said, he trusts me to make the right judgment with it, we really orchestrate his hairstyle together,” Price said. “He knows what he wants and I know what will work best with his features and hair type … it’s like silk. He has very soft hair [and] I hope it stays that way forever.”

Erstwhile Fall Out Boy frontman’s solo EP made iTunes debut Tuesday.
By James Montgomery

Patrick Stump
Photo: Michael Caulfield/WireImage

Late last year, when Patrick Stump told MTV News that his solo debut, Soul Punk, was tentatively due in February, there was much rejoicing from long-suffering Fall Out Boy fans, all of whom were clamoring for any bit of news surrounding their favorite group.

Of course, that rejoicing was tempered some when it was subsequently announced that Stump had pushed back Soul Punk in favor of a six-song EP called Truant Wave. And on Tuesday, with little lead-up and absolutely zero promotion, that EP premiered on iTunes. It not only provided FOB fans a preview of where Stump is headed, musically, but also served as a point of division among their ranks. Some loved the electronic-leaning, R&B-teasing jams, while others, well, they were probably hoping Stump would return to his pop-punk roots.

When he spoke to MTV News on Thursday, Stump addressed both sides of the issue, because, quite frankly, he understands why some would be upset by his new direction. In fact, that’s part of the reason he put out Truant Wave in the first place: to soften the blow.

“I really want Soul Punk to have as much of a chance to have it be listened to discerningly,” he laughed. “And if I’m going to disappoint people by not [making] Take This to Your Grave, Part II, I would rather do that before Soul Punk, because that record means something to me.”

Of course, there were other reasons for rushing the EP out, most of which he learned the hard way during Fall Out Boy’s final days.

“Remember when Fall Out boy was putting out Folie à Deux and were going to put it out on Election Day, and then, for all these various reasons, all signs pointed to ‘Don’t do this’? That was sort of the case here. The logistics just weren’t lining up,” he explained. “And I had way too much material. … A lot of it didn’t make sense on the record, but it still felt like something, so I made a little mini-record out of them, and it sort of became a concept record for me. So for all those reasons and more, I decided, ‘Screw it, I’m going to put this out.’ ”

So, yes, Soul Punk is still coming, but in the meantime, Stump hopes fans will take the time to digest the tunes he’s presenting on Truant Wave, a shiny menagerie of rubber-band funk, electro-pop and spacey, 23rd-century R&B that’s also, as Stump explained, a bit of a concept record too.

“It’s not as strict a concept album in that I don’t have a narrator or epic space battles or anything like that. It’s pretty bare-bones and it works as a pop record,” he said. “Basically, I took this idealistic, naive little character, and at the beginning of the record, he has the best intentions, the highest hopes, and, as you get towards the middle of the record, he’s just such an a–hole. And then the character gets really dark, and then, at the end, I envisioned him being really down and out in Hollywood, like drunk and telling someone, ‘Look, kid, don’t make the same mistakes I did.’ … It has a narrative, but it’s not like I named the characters or know anything about these things.”

So, for now, with his EP just out and a sold-out run of shows on the horizon, Stump is content to sit back and watch fans figure out his new direction. And, at the moment, he couldn’t be happier with the results.

“I told people about this record a week ago, two weeks ago, there was no promo, no press, nothing, so, for it to do as well as it has, it’s definitely gratifying,” he said. “In the back of my head, there’s always this little voice that’s like, ‘Just don’t blow it,’ and so far, so good, you know?”

After watching “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never,” did you leave the theater thinking there was even more Justin Bieber film footage that you wanted to see? Well, your wish has been granted. A new version of the movie, dubbed “Director’s Fan Cut,” is about to hit theaters this week for an exclusive one-week run.

The extended version will hit theaters on Friday. According to a press release, it will include “more of Justin’s friends and hometown life, new songs and performances, and special footage shot at fan premieres across the country.”

“I realized I had an embarrassment of riches when I was in the cutting room,” director Jon Chu said in a statement. “This cut allows me to retain some of the best scenes from the original movie, while incorporating previously unseen footage and new material I shot during our extensive promotional tour on behalf of the movie. Justin’s dedication to his fanbase is unwavering and I was inspired as a filmmaker to attempt to provide them a unique experience that showed even more of his world.”

The film originally opened on February 11 and features a behind-the-scenes look into the rise of Bieber’s career. It also includes concert footage shot at various shows during his tour, including his stop at Madison Square Garden last summer.

“It is a testament to the professionalism and tenacity of Jon and the production team for turning around this new version of ‘Justin Bieber: Never Say Never’ director’s fan cut in only a few months, giving fans an even-deeper look into Justin’s life,” Paramount Film Group President Adam Goodman said. “Giving fans an even deeper look into Justin’s life.” (MTV’s parent company, Viacom, also owns Paramount.)

‘I plan on making a lot more records, and hopefully one of them will be Grammy-worthy,’ singer tells Vanity Fair.

Last year was full of breakout music stars, including Ke$ha, who ruled the scene with a string of dance-pop hits (and a massive overflow of glitter). But not everyone is a Ke$ha fan: The singer was snubbed when the 2011 Grammy nominees were announced in December.

The starlet recently spoke to Vanity Fair about the Grammy snub and said she’s determined to score a nod sometime later in her career. And after calling the Recording Academy’s award “not that big a deal,” Ke$ha admitted that she was saddened by her lack of nominations.

“Of course I do,” the singer said when asked if she wanted a Grammy. “I was disappointed that I didn’t get nominated. But I’ve only been around for a year. I’m friends with the Black Keys, and they were nominated for the first time this year. And they’ve been around for a decade. That’s like half my life, so I really can’t be a brat about it.”

Ke$ha isn’t bitter about the situation either, telling the magazine, “I plan on making a lot more records, and hopefully one of them will be Grammy-worthy.”

While she may not be gearing up for the big show on Sunday night, Ke$ha is prepping for the launch of her first North American headlining tour, the Get $leazy Tour. The country-wide trek is scheduled to kick off on Tuesday in Portland, Oregon, and continue through May.

Justin Bieber gets his hair cut
Photo: TMZ

There are few celebrities these days that can set the news wires and Internets on fire by engaging in basic, everyday tasks. Lady Gaga, Robert Pattinson, Kim Kardashian and, of course, Justin Bieber, are among the few whose every move is cause for Twitter trends and celebrations.

Case in point, Bieber’s haircut. A photo of the 16-year-old’s newly shorn locks appeared on TMZ on Monday, along with news that the clippings will be given to charity to raise money for various causes, including animal rights.

Naturally, Bieber’s famously fluffy hair swoop has been the subject of innumerable news stories and tweets, so when MTV News checked in with his “Never Say Never” director Jon Chu on Tuesday (February 22), we had to bring up the very popular subject of Biebs’ new haircut. Chu’s only complaint was that Bieber didn’t let him know about the momentous occasion.

“I would have brought a 3-D camera there,” said Chu, who recently announced the release of a special “Director’s Fan Cut” of the film. “I would have shot it for ['Never Say Never'] 3.0.”

Chu went on to say that he won’t miss the shaggy flip and heartily approves of Bieber’s shorter ‘do.

“Two thumbs-up for the haircut, for sure. He’s wanted it for a long time,” Chu told us. “I’m just happy for him because he’s been holding on. He’s like, ‘I need to get the haircut, I want to get rid of it!’ But he has his hair flip which he can’t get rid of, but now it’s R.I.P. hair flip.”

We then pointed out that “R.I.P. hair flip” sounded like a perfect Bieber-related Twitter trending topic, and Chu informed us that we were way behind.

“It is a Twitter trending topic!” he said with a chuckle. “At least it was yesterday, last night.”

What do you think of Justin Bieber’s new hair? Tell us in the comments!

The star of ‘Take Me Home Tonight’ explains how he stumbled into acting as a teen.

Topher Grace
Photo: MTV News

Before Topher Grace became a household name as the lovably discomfited Eric on “That ’70s Show,” he was just another teenager looking for something to do. On the upcoming episode of MTV’s “When I Was 17,” the star of “Take Me Home Tonight” (which hits theaters next week) recalls his big break, which surprisingly stemmed from a turn in his high-school play.

“When I was 17, I made the varsity tennis team, and I wound up spraining my ankle twice, so I couldn’t do that that spring,” Grace mentions in the upcoming episode. The former athlete tried out for the lead role in his high school’s production of “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” a part he didn’t expect to land.

“I really didn’t think I’d get it. There were some kids who were really great actors, and I still maintain that they were better actors then I am,” Grace humbly notes.

Turns out, Topher’s theatrical turn would change his life as he knew it. “So the crazy thing about that play is this girl who was a friend of mine — her parents were big-time Hollywood producers. They wrote for ‘Saturday Night Live,’ they wrote ‘Wayne’s World’ and ‘Tommy Boy,’ and they came up to me after the play and said, ‘We’ll call you at some point,’ ” Grace recalls.

But the actor misinterpreted the thrilling news, thinking he was being pursued to go on coffee runs instead of auditions. “I thought they needed a P.A. on one of their shows, so I said something really stupid.”

Topher’s pal Gordon remembered the error, too: “He was like, ‘Yeah sure, baby. I’ll have my people call your people.’ ”

Fast-forward nine months later, and the big-time producers had an opportunity for the actor that he almost couldn’t believe. “They called me and they said, ‘We’re making a sitcom about the ’70s.’ I still thought they wanted an assistant, but they said, ‘Oh no, we want you to audition.’ ”

Turns out this little sitcom just happened to be the massive hit that launched Grace’s career.

Don’t miss when Grace’s “Take Me Home Tonight” co-stars Anna Farris and Dan Fogler dish on their adolescent occupations in the newest episode of “When I Was 17,” premiering Saturday at 11 a.m. ET on MTV.

‘I probably won’t get on this album, but hopefully the next one,’ singer/songwriter Sia says of song she pitched for Beyonce’s new album.

As Britney Spears and Lady Gaga gear up to release new albums, there’s another pop heavyweight who may offer them some friendly competition: Beyoncé. Details surrounding the singer’s next album remain scarce, but according to a few of the project’s collaborators, Bey is almost finished recording the follow-up to 2008′s I Am … Sasha Fierce and has managed to hit the studio with an extensive list of producers.

After gushing about her high hopes for working with Beyoncé, Australian songstress Sia revealed that she told B’s behind-the-scenes team that she wanted to lend a creative hand for the new album. “So I just said to all the producers, writers, everyone, help me make this happen, and then Diplo e-mailed me and said, ‘where are you in the world right now? would you be interested in flying to New York? I’m writing with Beyoncé,’ and I was like, ‘Yesss!’ ” the singer told MTV Australia.

Despite Diplo’s offer, Sia said she was unable to fly out because of schedule conflicts, but is in the process of pitching songs to Beyoncé. When asked if her submissions were for Beyoncé’s forthcoming LP, Sia said, “Well, there’s only one song left for this album, so I probably won’t get on this album, but hopefully the next one. That’s my dream, that’s my goal.”

Sia isn’t the only collaborator that has suggested Beyoncé is close to wrapping up studio sessions for the project. Sleigh Bells have confirmed working with the singer, but are weary on whether their work with the songstress will make the final cut. Speaking with NME.com, guitarist Derek Miller admitted, “I actually have no idea if the collaboration will ever be released.”

While Miller remained tight-lipped on details regarding the song (or songs?), the Sleigh Bells bandmate confessed that the collabo is just one of her many musical partnerships, saying, “Beyoncé works with whoever she wants to work with, probably 30 or 40 producers. It’s a totally different world from what I’m used to. So for me, it’s just exciting to hear something that I worked on but I can’t really say any more than that.”

Sia and the Sleigh Bells join a long list of other collaborators who have been tapped to work on Beyoncé’s new album, including Ne-Yo, S1, Jim Jonsin, Sean “The Pen” Garrett, The-Dream and Tricky Stewart.

Who do you want to see Beyoncé collaborate with on her new album? Share your suggestions in the comments.

Don’t miss “Snooki & Sway: Live From the Grammys,” a red-carpet live stream kicking off Sunday at 6 p.m. ET on MTV.com. And stick with us all Grammy night for coverage of the red carpet, the show, the afterparties and beyond!

As the 10th season of “American Idol” continues, Jennifer Lopez is using her new seat at the judges’ table as a platform to help launch her musical comeback.

It was announced on Wednesday (February 23) that the triple-threat entertainer will premiere the video for her single “On the Floor” during the Thursday, March 3 “Idol” broadcast at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

The RedOne-produced dance track, which features Pitbull, was released on iTunes worldwide on Monday and has already had an impressive impact. According to a press release, less than 24 hours after its release, “On The Floor” has surged to #3 on the U.S. iTunes digital chart and is at #1 on the chart in Spain, France, Sweden, Australia, Finland, Greece, Austria and Belgium.

MTV News recently visited Lopez on the set of her Taj Stansberry-directed clip, where the pop star dished a few details about the video.

“I play one character where she kind of runs this party, acts like she’s kind of over it, but at the same time loves it and loves this kind of underground kind of party dance culture,” she explained. “So I got to be wild and crazy, and at the same time I got to be sexy and sweet too.”

“On the Floor” is the lead single from J.Lo’s upcoming album, Love? The “Idol” judge also spoke about her connection to the song and admitted she made RedOne replay the club jam several times after her first listen.

“Because I really feel like, emotionally, I connected to it, but also because of how much I love to dance and how much that’s always been such a big part of who I am since I started,” the songstress explained of why she fell for the song. “Since I was a little girl, I just totally connected with the idea of getting out there.”

Gaga’s Monster Ball concert in New Jersey on Saturday night included her new #1 single, ‘Born This Way,’ and all her other big hits.

Lady Gaga performs in Atlantic City on Saturday

ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey — “I’ve missed you all so much!” Lady Gaga gushed to her little monsters who filled the sold-out Boardwalk Hall arena on Saturday night.

As much as she was missed during her superhumanly brief tour hiatus, the question on everyone’s mind at the Monster Ball was whether or not Gaga would perform “Born This Way.”

Check out photos from Lady Gaga’s Atlantic City Show.

Halfway through her encore performance of “Bad Romance,” Mother Monster took a beat to seductively mutter, “You better not leave when this song is done. There may be a surprise.”

And sure enough, after three minutes of deafening monster screams in the darkness, Miss Gaga stormed the stage once more, surrounded by her dancers, all in the same flesh-colored latex we saw at the Grammys. She belted out her new #1 hit at the top of her lungs and danced with every bit of energy that a normal human would not have after an almost-two-hour gargantuan show.

The second-place award for the wild night’s biggest moment went to the pop star’s announcement that she will be back next year with the “Born This Way Ball,” which — judging from the roar in the venue — is already guaranteed to be sold out a year before tickets even go on sale.

For this concert, Gaga stuck true to her Monster Ball format rather than transition to the material that will appear on her upcoming album, Born This Way. Besides the title track, the only other new song she performed was “You and I,” which she has already played at several shows during her most recent round of touring.

The set list featured all of her biggest hits, including “Poker Face,” “Paparazzi,” “Telephone” and “Just Dance.” The more intimate piano portion of the show, meanwhile, was noticeably shortened since the singer has dropped her “Fame Monster” rock tune “Speechless.”

Looking as fit as ever, Gaga showed off her toned tummy for most of the second half of the performance, thrusting her body to every beat that could possibly be danced to. Singing loud and strong, Gaga took a moment during “Teeth,” to remind her fans once again that she never does and never will lip synch.

Scissor Sisters opened the concert with six sultry and dance-heavy numbers, including their hit, “I Don’t Feel Like Dancin’.”

The next stop on the Monster Ball tour is Madison Square Garden in New York City on both Monday and Tuesday, during which Lady Gaga’s first HBO concert special will be taped.

This year, nobody defied description quite like Ke$ha, the pop oddity who shows no signs of slowing down.
By James Montgomery

Ke$ha
Photo: Venturelli/ Getty Images

In January, when “Tik Tok” was just starting to hit, I described Ke$ha as “a 22-year-old pop confectionary/cautionary tale.” By November, when “We R Who We R” debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, I had crowned her an “outcast icon.” The truth probably lies somewhere in between those two statements, but if there’s a better way to sum up the pop star’s rather incredible rise to fame, I am unaware of it.

Because in 2010, there really was no one else who came close to matching Ke$ha, whether in terms of sheer chart dominance (“Tik Tok,” enjoyed the year’s longest run at #1, spending nine weeks atop the Hot 100), or pure WTF-ery. She began the year as a belching, squelching, booze-swilling party monster and ended it as perhaps the most unlikely of role models — an unrepentant oddball who not only dared to speak her mind, but defy conventions, too. And through it all, she remained largely unclassifiable, shifting between genres (pop, hip-hop, rock) and personas (dumpster-diving diva, Topanga Canyon bohemian, DayGlo star child) with each successive hit. And because of that, Ke$ha became one of the year’s most interesting characters, the kind of pop oddity that leaves critics alternately grasping at adjectives and scratching their heads.

“I think ‘What is Ke$ha?’ is definitely the question, more than ‘Who is Ke$ha?’ because the ‘What?’ is really the thing,New York Times writer Jon Caramanica told MTV News. “When she first came into the game, she was this pop singer with a little bit of a country background, but [doing] this sort of whiny, white-girl rap … but, if anything, ‘Tik Tok’ proved there’s an entire audience of people who are pop fans, but who have a really high tolerance for rap music. Maybe they’re not going to buy a Kanye West record, but they’re not unafraid of hip-hop. And with Ke$ha, and her loose, ‘I don’t give a f—’ approach to making these songs resonates with the loose, ‘I don’t give a f—’ approach of the fans in listening to the songs. They hear something of themselves in her.”

Of course, Ke$ha suffered for her, uh, art, becoming one of the year’s most popular punching bags — particularly following a pair of bizarre performances on “Saturday Night Live” — but as the year draws to a close, her grip on the pop world seems to be permanent. Not only is she the unlikeliest of stars, she’s also one of the most persistent … and love her or hate her, you’ve got to admit that she made 2010 just a bit more bearable, even if it was with her willingness to push the boundaries of absurdity. Well, her songs were pretty great, too. And she did it entirely her way.

“I think Ke$ha’s definitely gone way past her 15 minutes of fame, [but] the appeal with her is that there’s an honesty,” Noah Callahan-Bever, editor in chief of Complex magazine, said. “In a market of totally prefab pop stuff, there’s almost a sloppiness to her whole persona, and I think that realness appeals to people. I think it doesn’t hurt that she works with the best producer in pop music, either,” he said, referring to right-hand man Dr. Luke.

In 2010, thanks to that winning combination of pitch-perfect pop and pure, unfiltered weirdness, Ke$ha pretty much conquered the world. She won over fans and earned begrudging respect from the critics. And she wore dead animals on her head. Wherever she goes in 2011, I’ll follow. And I’ll likely be just as perplexed as the rest of you.

Do you expect Ke$ha’s party to stop or keep rocking in 2011? Let us know in the comments.

British singer’s second album hit U.S. stores Tuesday (February 22).
By James Montgomery

Adele
Photo: MTV News

Adele’s jaw-dropping sophomore album, 21, officially hit stores in the States on Tuesday (February 22), having already topped the charts in her native U.K. (and most of Europe too). And while it might seem odd for her to be so excited about another release — especially since 21 has been out for more than a month worldwide — the 22-year-old songstress isn’t hiding the fact that she’s anxiously awaiting her first-week numbers here in the U.S. To hear her tell it, she never thought she’d get the opportunity to sell albums here at all.

“Oh, it’s magical being here. I didn’t think I’d ever release a record here,” she laughed. “It’s a big deal in England. There’s a massive thing, like, ‘Did you crack America?!?’ The biggest acts in England, no one has any idea who they are here. … I’m not a radio artist here, I’m not on pop stations really, I have these songs that go everywhere. So it really is people are proper behind me here, because I sell records; I don’t sell singles. And that doesn’t happen anywhere.”

And her (presumed) Stateside triumph would be even sweeter considering, during the promotional run for her last album, the Grammy-winning 19, she steeped herself in all things American. And a lot of those influences — country, R&B, bluegrass, jazz, plus a few you might not suspect — are all readily apparent on 21.

“I was a proper sponge when I did my big bulk of American touring. I was on a tour bus, so I was literally driving across America; I wasn’t getting on planes or anything like that. I’d be in Baltimore and hear this amazing, crazy hip-hop, and then be in Atlanta, and then in Texas, Nashville and end up in California. [And] I loved it,” she said. “And that rubbed off on this record. I don’t think I’ve made an Americana-sounding record, but certainly the delivery of a lot of the blues and country and rockabilly artists, and hip-hop. Like, I’m totally fascinated with the way Kanye and Nas and Mos Def manipulate a word to make it rhyme and to make it really fascinating when it’s actually pretty mundane. Analyzing normal things, but making them electric, that’s definitely rubbed off on my delivery and my writing, the way I connect with my songs and channel them.”

And while she’s channeled her love of American music into her new album (and a mysterious hip-hop collaboration that she can’t mention “just in case it doesn’t happen”), what resonates most with fans on both sides of the Atlantic is the unflinching honesty she displays throughout. Songs like “Rolling in the Deep,” “Set Fire to the Rain” and the shattering “Someone Like You” are very much about the death of her first, as she put it, “real relationship,” and that heartbreak not only provides the backbone to the album, but has connected with her fans in a way even she couldn’t have predicted.

“It broke my heart when I wrote this record, so the fact that people are taking it to their hearts is like the best way to recover. ‘Cause I’m still not fully recovered. It’s going to take me 10 years to recover, I think, from the way I feel about my last relationship,” she said. “It was the biggest deal in my entire life to date. … He made me totally hungry. … He was older, he was successful in his own right, whereas my boyfriends before were my age and not really doing much. And he got me interested in film and literature and food and wine and traveling and politics and history, and those were things I was never, ever interested in. I was interested in going clubbing and getting drunk.”

And so if (or, more likely, when) 21 tops the Billboard albums chart, Adele will celebrate in her own way. She’s gone through the heartbreak, she’s grown up, and she carries with her a truly tremendous new album. Though someone will probably have to tell her when her album is #1. Even though she’s anxiously waiting for those first-week numbers, she’s actually stopped paying attention.

“I disconnected my Internet,” she laughed. “I have no idea what’s going on!”

Will you be picking up Adele’s latest? Let us know in the comments!

Shout It Out‘s message is ‘Get out there and let loose,’ Taylor Hanson says.

The Hanson brothers released their latest music video, for their single “Give a Little,” on Tuesday (February 22). The sparse performance video for the Shout It Out track seamlessly includes dancers of all backgrounds showing off their skills. It’s a far cry from last year’s over-the-top clip for “Thinking ‘Bout Somethin’,” an homage to the Blues Brothers.

Crediting much of the success of “Thinking ‘Bout Somethin’ ” to the video itself, Taylor Hanson said the guys have a new mission with this video.

“With the ‘Give A Little’ video, we’re more thinking, ‘Hey this is about creating a template, a backdrop that just makes you love the song more,’ ” he explained to MTV News. “The difference with this song and the video is that it’s much simpler and much more about getting the song ingrained in your mind, thus was a very different thing.”

The video is, in fact, pretty simple: It features cardboard cutouts, ballerinas, dancing couples, some paint splatter and even hip-hop dancers. The guys get in the action during a big dance break, playing instruments while surrounded by the clip’s various performers.

“When we made the video, it was kind of the release after the high production of ‘Thinking ‘Bout Somethin’, ” Taylor explained. “With the ‘Give a Little’ video, it’s almost back to the blank slate. We invited all these dancers. We just set up a room, cranked up the music and threw a party and let people dance. The attitude is not about everyone doing the same moves; it’s about putting a unique twist.”

The video’s dance theme makes tons of sense, given the song’s lyrics, including “Let your body lose control” and “You know she just wants to dance.” The guys explained that while they aren’t known for their killer moves, they enjoy the vibe that a song like this puts into the world.

“There’s this energy to it,” Taylor said. “Strangely, there’s this dance theme. We’re not known for our dancing, but dancing is this metaphor that’s in the record. Kind of, ‘Get out there and let loose.’

“Spring will be here before we know it, and the song is upbeat and hopefully engaging.”

‘It gives her a whole new look and it shows how creative I am,’ Grammy-nominated producer says of Cannibal singer.

Producer Bangladesh‘s biggest break came when he powered Lil Wayne‘s “A Milli.” Then he upped the ante on Weezy’s recent release “6 Foot 7 Foot.” So, what does the Grammy-nominated beatsmith have in store for the new year? More of the same, actually.

Bangladesh hopes to continue his genre-bending ways, whether it’s lending rock-leaning sensibilities to Lil Wayne or injecting a pop star’s work with edgy hip-hop drums. He and Dr. Luke (Britney Spears, Pink, Katy Perry) recently worked together on Ke$ha’s “Sleazy,” from her Cannibal LP.

“I met Luke through a mutual friend, so it was like me walking into a stranger’s house,” Bangladesh told MTV News. “I really didn’t know what to expect. But it was all love. It was kind of like the roles were reversed, like I was the biggest producer and he just had a couple of hits. Once I saw how he felt about me, I was like man, I might be the truth. [He laughs.]”

After hitting it off, they joined forces for “Sleazy,” the first of many collaborations Bangladesh is shooting for with the “Tik Tok” star.

“That’s a good look, because it gives her a whole new look and it shows how creative I am,” he explained. “It shows how music is changing. And it shows that I’m kind of the changer behind it. The leader. I’m trying to mix the different genres where it’s still convincing, like, I believe them doing this.”

Justin Timberlake also wanted to sign Bieber, ‘Never Say Never’ star said in 2009.

Just as the world was learning who Justin Bieber was, MTV News caught up with the shaggy-haired singer in September 2009. He was gearing up to release his debut album, My World, and plotting his pop-world domination. In the year and a half since that interview, Bieber has done the nearly impossible, launching himself into the pop mega-sphere.

In the chat, Bieber recalled how he and his manager, Scooter Braun, met and eventually got big names interested in signing the teen.

“My manager found me on YouTube. He flew me out to Atlanta for the first time — I’d never actually been on a plane before. He flew me to Atlanta where i was going to the studio to meet some people,” he recalled.

“And Usher happened to roll up in his Range Rover. I ran up to him, and I was like, ‘Usher, I love your songs. Want me to sing you one?’ The politest possible way he could say no, he did. … I took the hint. I didn’t get to sing for him: He had to run into a studio session.”

But later, Usher was beckoning the teen back to the ATL. “He actually watched my videos — after my manager got to talking to him — and was like, ‘I should have let this kid sing,’ and flew me back to Atlanta where I got to sing for him in a proper setting. A week later, I had a meeting with Justin Timberlake, who also wanted to sign me, so they both kind of wanted me.”

As the story goes, Bieber went with Usher, and the two never looked back.

“As far as Usher being my mentor, he’s definitely given me words of wisdom. I hear it from everybody, but definitely to hear it from Usher is great, just to stay humble and grounded is very important,” he explained.

“There’s a lot of people, especially young stars, that have gone down the wrong path, and I definitely plan to stay humble and stay grounded and keep my family first, because that stuff really is important in life.”

On Friday, Justin Bieber’s 3-D documentary, “Never Say Never,” opens. The film takes a look at how the teen star worked to hit it big. MTV News has been chatting with him along the way, from the time he first burst on the scene in 2009 until now, as he embarks on a huge 2011 that will include a tour and more new music.

The ‘Gossip Girl’ star gets her party on with ‘Front Cut,’ a new track that just hit the Internet.

For a while there it seemed like Leighton Meester was only going to be “Country Strong,” but now she’s again embracing her dance-club music roots on a new track. On Tuesday, a new Meester tune titled “Front Cut” hit the Web.

The “Gossip Girl” star’s track, a certain club banger that could easily be confused with any song in Ke$ha’s dance-heavy discography, features the writing, production and vocal talents of Clinton Sparks.

“I’m too fly to be all up in this line, boy/ I should get a front cut/ I should get a front cut,” Meester proclaims in the opening lines of the song — which is all about getting key access to a slamming party — before some killer keyboards and heavy beats kick in. She goes on to rap/sing, “You see me coming through/ Not just me, my girlfriends too/ You know what we came to do/ That’s why we in front of you.”

Meester really displays her swagga on the song’s bridge, when she goes on to sing, “Don’t tell me I gotta wait in the line/ I said f— the front door, I should go in through the side/ Why don’t you/ Lift up that rope to let through/ All these girls in my crew / Give me a drink or a few/ I mean a bottle or two/ We’ve been out here too damn long / And I hear Clint Sparks playin’ my song/ Got my diamond and my Louboutins on/ Ya better hurry up or I’ll be gone/ Don’t tell me I gotta wait in no line/ ‘Cause there’s plenty of other clubs that want me inside.”

With no official release date for the track or any definite plans for an album release, it seems that for now Meester fans will have to just enjoy the song online. The singer/actress’ pop-star career has been long-simmering, to say the least. She was expected to drop an album in 2010, but that never happened.

In 2009, she appeared on Cobra Starship’s “Good Girls Go Bad,” then she hooked up with Robin Thicke on the song “Somebody to Love.”

So what do you think of Meester’s new club banger? Share your opinions in the comments.

<i>XXL</i>’s 2011 Freshmen 11
Photo: <i>XXL</i>

The annual Freshman issue of XXL magazine isn’t due on newsstands for about another month but after the cover was leaked online by Eighty8 Clothing — with the T-shirt company’s watermark prominently displayed over the image — XXL posted an official high-resolution look at the cover on its website.

The magazine’s 2011 freshman class, featuring the best emerging hip-hop talent as selected by its editors, is made up of Meek Mill, Big K.R.I.T., CyHi Da Prince, Lil Twist, Yelawolf, Fred the Godson, Mac Miller, YG, Lil B, Kendrick Lamar and Diggy Simmons.

And those that made the list represent a wide spectrum of rap talent across regions and styles. Mac Miller is from Philadelphia and recently signed to Rick Ross’ Maybach Music Group, CyHi Da Prince hails from Atlanta and is signed to Def Jam (and also aligned with Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music), while Mac Miller is a white, Jewish rapper hailing from Pittsburgh. Interestingly, this is actually Yelawolf’s second consecutive XXL cover: The Alabama MC appeared on the previous issue, along with Eminem and fellow Shady Records signees Joe Budden, Royce Da 5’9″, Joell Ortiz and Crooked I of Slaughterhouse.

After the cover was posted, many fans, artists and critics took to Twitter — “XXL Freshman” became a trending topic — and other sites to congratulate those selected but also to debate about who should and shouldn’t have made the list. While the final group is usually limited to only 10 acts, this year 11 were selected.

The annual issue is one of XXL‘s most popular and most debated. The inaugural XXL Freshman class of 2007, then dubbed Leaders of the New School, consisted of Lil Boosie, Lupe Fiasco, Saigon, Rich Boy, Plies, Gorilla Zoe, Young Dro, Joell Ortiz, Papoose and Crooked I. The class of ’09 featured Ace Hood, Curren$y, Wale, Asher Roth, B.o.B, Kid Cudi, Charles Hamilton, Blu, Corey Gunz and Mickey Factz. And last year’s picks were Nipsey Hu$$le, Wiz Khalifa, J. Cole, Pill, Freddie Gibbs, Big Sean, OJ Da Juiceman, Donnis, Jay Rock and Fashawn.

What do you think of this year’s Freshman class? Tell us in the comments!

Don’t miss “Snooki & Sway: Live From the Grammys,” a red-carpet live stream kicking off Sunday at 6 p.m. ET on MTV.com. And stick with us all Grammy night for coverage of the red carpet, the show, the afterparties and beyond!

Hometown hero Kobe Bryant may have blistered the Eastern Conference during the first half of Sunday night’s (February 20) NBA All-Star Game, but it took Rihanna , Drake, and Kanye West to bring the Los Angeles crowd to their feet, with a rollicking performance during half-time of the gala sporting event.

Wearing a jet black ensemble and flanked on either side by string instrumentalists, RiRi opened the set with an orchestral arrangement of her hit “Umbrella,” before segueing into the faster tempo of “Only Girl” and “Rude Boy.”

Rihanna was joined on stage for her fourth song when collaborator and rumored former paramour Drake jumped up from the audience to sing the duo’s hit “What’s My Name.”

The rapper might have even scored the most points of the night by managing to work “Happy Birthday” into the song’s lyrics for Rihanna, who was celebrating turning 23-years-old.

But with apologies to Drake (and Chris Paul), the assist of the evening came from Kanye West, who made a surprise appearance at the Staples Center to join Rihanna in singing the pair’s new single, “All Of The Lights,” just one day after the release of the song’s video.

Backed by three large video screens that flashed disorienting, bright colors at lightning speeds, the performance was almost a recreation of the video, in fact, particularly the section inspired by Gaspar Noe’s 2009 French film “Enter the Void.”

As with any All-Star game, though, all the stars weren’t on stage. While Rihanna, Drake, and Kanye performed, Jay-Z, Sean Combs, and MVP of the celebrity All-Star game Justin Bieber among others sat courtside.
